Things To Do At Night In Downtown Dubai

So you are in Dubai and it is nighttime. What now? The heat is finally gone. That is the first good thing. The sun goes down and the city wakes up. I mean really wakes up. Downtown is the place to be. No question about it.

I have been there many times. Each time I find something new. But some things never change. They are always good. Let me tell you about them. Not in any fancy way. Just straight talk.

First Stop Should Be the Market

First Stop Should Be the Market

Souk Al Bahar. That is the name. It looks old. Like really old. But it is not old at all. They built it to look that way. And it works. The stone walls. The wooden beams. The lanterns. All of it feels like another time.

I like going there around 5 PM. Not too early. Not too late. The light is nice at that time. Not harsh anymore. You can walk around without sweating. The shops are open. They have all kinds of stuff. Scarves. Perfume. Little boxes. Big carpets. Just look. You do not have to buy.

There is a bridge from this market. It goes over the water. You can see the big tower from there. The Burj Khalifa. Everyone takes photos from this spot. I have taken maybe a hundred photos from here. They all look the same but I keep taking them.

The Mall Is Huge

After the market you cross the bridge. Now you are in Dubai Mall. This place is insane. I am not exaggerating. You can get lost here. I have gotten lost here. More than once. The mall is that big.

But here is the thing. You do not need to see all of it. Just see the main parts. The aquarium is in the middle. Big glass wall. Fish swimming around. Sharks too. Kids love it. Adults love it too. Everyone just stands there staring. It is calming somehow.

The mall has shops. So many shops. All the brands you know. All the brands you do not know. If you like shopping, this is heaven. If you do not like shopping, just walk through. The people watching is good enough.

One thing about the mall. It is cold inside. Really cold. The AC is always on full blast. I bring a light jacket. Otherwise I shiver. It is funny because outside is so hot. Inside is like a fridge.

Where to Eat Dinner?

Time Out Market. This is where I tell people to eat. Why? Because everyone can find something. You do not have to agree on one restaurant. You just walk around the food stalls. Pick what looks good. Pay for it. Sit down and eat.

The food here is not cheap street food. It is good food. Real chefs make it. But it is not too expensive either. Maybe 80 to 150 dirhams for a meal. Depends what you get.

I usually get the grilled meat. There is a stall that does lamb chops. Really good. My friend always gets sushi. Another friend gets pasta. We all sit together and eat different things. It works out well.

The view from this place is great. Big windows. You see the fountain and the tower. If you come early, you get a table by the window. That is the best spot. Everyone wants that spot.

The Fountain Show

This is free. I like free things. The fountain show happens every evening. Water shoots up. Lights change color. Music plays. It is simple but beautiful.

The shows are short. Maybe three or four minutes. Then they stop. Then they start again after some time. You can watch it many times. Each time the music is different. Sometimes classical. Sometimes pop. Sometimes Arabic songs. All of them work.

You can stand on the bridge. You can stand on the steps. You can stand anywhere near the lake. But try the boardwalk. That is the walkway that goes out over the water. You stand right next to the fountains. Water drops hit your face. It feels nice. Especially when it is warm outside.

People cheer when the show ends. I do not know why. But I cheer too. It is fun.

The Building Lights Up

After the fountain, look up. The Burj Khalifa does its own show. Lights on the building. Moving patterns. Bright colors. It is like a screen but the screen is a building. The tallest building in the world.

This show is also free. You just look up. That is all. No ticket needed. No waiting in line. Just stand there and look up.

The show is different from the fountain. Less water. More lights. Both are good. I cannot pick which one I like more. They are just different.

Sometimes the lights show messages. Like Happy New Year or something. Other times it is just patterns. Shapes moving up and down. It looks cool.

The Park Is Quiet

Burj Park is not big. But it is nice. Green grass. Benches to sit on. Views of everything. This is where you go when you need a break from the crowds.

The mall area gets packed. People everywhere. Pushing. Shoving. Taking photos. It gets tiring. The park is the opposite. Quiet. Calm. Relaxed.

You can sit here and just look at the skyline. The buildings look different from here. More spread out. More peaceful. The lights reflect on the water. It is pretty.

I like coming here after the fountain shows. My feet hurt from walking. I sit on a bench. I watch people walk by. Dogs sometimes. Families with kids. Couples holding hands. It is nice.

Going to the Top

Now this one costs money. Tickets to the top of Burj Khalifa are not cheap. But honestly? Worth it. The view is something else.

You go up in an elevator. Fast elevator. Really fast. Your ears pop. Then you are at the top. 124th floor or 148th floor. Depends which ticket you buy.

The view is all of Dubai. Lights everywhere. Roads look like glowing lines. Buildings look small. The fountain looks tiny from up here. You can see the whole city spread out.

Book your tickets early. This is important. I made this mistake once. I went there and tickets were sold out. For the whole evening. Had to come back the next day. So book ahead.

Best time to go is after 9 PM. The city is fully lit up. Everything looks magical from up there.

Some Practical Things

Dress properly. This is Dubai. Not the beach. Not a backpacker hostel. People dress well here. Men wear trousers and closed shoes. Women wear nice clothes. Nothing too revealing. This is just how it is.

Bring your ID. Some places check. Even if you are not drinking. Just keep a copy of your passport. Safe that way.

Taxis are everywhere. You can find them outside the mall. Outside the hotels. Outside everywhere. Clean taxis. Fair prices. No haggling. The meter runs and you pay that.

Weekends are busy. Friday and Saturday. Everyone is out. Crowds are big. Queues are long. If you can come on a weekday, do that. Tuesday or Wednesday is good.

Drinking in Downtown

Drinking in Downtown

You can drink here. Yes. But not everywhere. Only in bars and restaurants. Hotels mainly. Not on the street. Not in public places. That is not allowed.

The drinks are expensive. A cocktail costs maybe 100 dirhams. Sometimes more. Beer is cheaper but still expensive. This is just what it costs in Dubai.

Ce La Vi is a rooftop place. Nice views. Good drinks. Expensive but nice. People dress up to go there. It is a scene. You know what I mean.

If you drink, be careful. Do not get drunk. Do not make trouble. The rules are strict. Everyone knows this. Just be sensible.

With Kids

The whole area is good for families. Kids love the fountain. Kids love the aquarium. Kids love the ice rink in the mall. Lots to do.

Time Out Market has food for kids too. Burgers. Pasta. Ice cream. Nothing fancy. Just normal food.

Just watch the crowds. The fountain area gets very crowded. Hold your kids close. Easy to lose someone in that crowd. Keep an eye out.

What to Wear and Bring?

Comfortable shoes. This is the most important thing. You will walk a lot. The mall is big. The walkways are long. Your feet will hurt if you wear bad shoes. I learned this the hard way.

Bring a charger. Your phone will die. You will take photos. Videos. Use maps. All of this drains battery. A small power bank helps. Light jacket. The AC is strong indoors. You will get cold. Outside is warm. Inside is cold. You go in and out. The jacket helps.

Final Thoughts

Downtown Dubai at night is special. I have been to many cities. Many places. This one is different. The buildings are bigger. The lights are brighter. Everything feels larger than life. You do not need to spend a lot of money. The fountain is free. The light show is free. The park is free. Walking around is free. Only the tower costs money. And dinner of course.

Take your time. Do not rush. The evening goes by fast. Enjoy each part. Watch the fountain twice. Sit on a bench. Look at the people. Eat good food. This is what makes a good night.
